Underglaze pencils are used like colored pencils.

Painting is done on the bisque-fired clay body, which is later covered with a transparent glaze using the underglaze technique.
Without glaze, the colors have no adhesion. Underglaze pencils can be sharpened with a knife or a sharpener.
A sharpener for thick pencils works best
